Upon arriving at Northern Lights, you have many options on how to spend your time.

In the spring, summer and fall, take advantage of a complimentary canoe down at The Stillwater Shop. While there, do a little shopping, you will find a great selection of gifts, souvenirs, and lodge décor items. For a sampling, visit our online gift shop.

Hiking opportunities include an excursion into the Five Ponds or Pepperbox Wilderness areas. Mountain bike our dirt roads and venture into the Independence Wild Forest via back roads such as the Basket Factory Rd. or the McCarthy Rd. For a real mountain bike adventure, hire a boat taxi to take you and your bikes accross the water to the six mile road and bike through the woods to Beaver River Station and back again!

Should you wish to venture out in your own boat (the absolute best way to see the reservoir), the free public boat launch is ¼ mile away from the Bed and Breakfast or you may rent a motor boat or a pontoon boat at The Stillwater Shop from DOG Equipment Rentals. Fishing opportunities abound on the Reservoir as well as shoreline fishing in the Beaver River , below the dam. You will primarily encounter small mouth bass, splake, lake trout and perch.

The Norridgewock River Boat Cruise is another opportunity for a leisurely tour of the Reservoir. This is a great way to spend an afternoon and hear the history of the area as well as visit Beaver River Station and the Norridgewock lodge for lunch to experience a place in the Adirondacks where time has stood still. They are off-grid and there are no roads to get there! Frank’s favorite lunch entrée is Ginger’s Buffalo Chicken Strips!

For those of you seeking relaxation after your excursions or instead of a physical adventure, allow us to schedule a massage for you in the privacy of your room. Massage is 30 minutes or one hour and subject to availability of the massage therapist. Appointments for massage should be made well in advance but we will do our best to arrange for last minute requests as well!

Feel free to meander through the nature trail on our property, or just sit and read or watch the birds at our feeders near the house. Far away from sources of light pollution you will find exceptional star gazing opportunities and maybe be fortunate enough to encounter the Aurora Borealis (click link for aurora forecast).

For a visit into Old Forge, you will have a scenic 28 mile drive which takes approximately 45 minutes. On the way there, you will drive by Big Moose Lake , and pass the historic stone chapel. Tours of the chapel are available one day a week in the summer time. There are additional hiking opportunities along the Big Moose Road , such as Moss Lake , Cascade Lake or Windfall Pond. For a great overview of trails in the area, obtain a West Central Wilderness Map.

In Old Forge, you may visit the Art Center where you can attend a workshop in addition to viewing an art show, take a cruise of the Fulton Chain of Lakes, take the Chair Lift and Alpine Slide at McCauley Mountain, take a ride on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, visit the historical association, attend the Mountain Theatre Co. production, as well as walk the main street and browse the local gift shops of the area. There are also many fine restaurants in town. Old Forge Event Schedule

The Adirondack Speedway in New Bremen is a 40 minute drive from Northern Lights. Their event schedule is available on their website.

To arrange for a seaplane ride, you may drive to their location or you may have them pick you up at the reservoir.

Horseback riding is available in Inlet and Old Forge, at Flatrock Mountain Ranch. Flatrock Mountain Ranch also offers pony rides on their Buckaroo trail and short and/or long term horse boarding. If you have your own horses you may explore the trails near Flatrock Mountain Ranch OR the NYS Otter Creek Horse Trail System in Glenfield and stay at the B&B at the end of the day. We are about a 35 minute drive from Otter Creek. Short and/or long term boarding is available at Otter Creek Stables. You can ride from their property directly onto the Otter Creek Horse Trails. You AND your horses will be comfortable at the end of the day!

If you are here for an extended stay, there are other day trip opportunities worth the drive: The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake is about two hours; the historic Sagamore and the Durant cruise on Raquette Lake are approximately an hour and fifteen minutes.

Winter brings opportunities for snowmobiling on the extensive trail system of upstate New York and you may sled right from our door. Additionally, the hiking trails in the area transform into snowshoe and cross country ski adventures. Snow shoes are available for guest use at no charge. Nearby down hill skiing can be found at McCauley Mountain in Old Forge or at Snow Ridge in Turin (a 45 minute drive).

For lunches, make arrangements in advance and The Stillwater Shop will pack you a picnic lunch to take with you on any outing. Dinner is available just down the road at the Stillwater Restaurant. Here you will find warm hospitality and an extensive menu, Jackie’s favorite is the crab cakes and don’t pass on Marian’s coconut cream pie! A short drive to Big Moose or to Number Four will provide additional dining opportunities OR for those wishing for a light meal, discuss the take-out options available from The Stillwater Shop with your hosts, Frank and Jackie.
